Learn how compassion and root-cause medicine can transform autoimmunity
Sacramento, Calif.- There are many types of Autoimmune conditions. What they all have in common is that the immune system is attacking self. Many factors contribute to the self-attack, but one common thread is literally your attitude toward yourself. This may look like being really hard on yourself, harsh self-talk, self-sabotage or betrayal, or just generally lacking self-compassion, understanding and forgiveness.
When autoimmunity is an issue, certainly this relationship with self must change if you want to liberate yourself from attack-on-self. Becoming aware of how you treat yourself, your self-talk, the thoughts you have about yourself, and even the ways you vocalize those thoughts is a huge step in the right direction. Catching yourself in these words, thoughts and actions that go against-self, and flipping the script to self-compassion is such an important practice, whether or not you have autoimmunity.
Development of autoimmunity
Of course, there may also be physical and physiological reasons for the development of autoimmunity. Finding the underlying cause(s) is a crucial step, so the cause(s) can be identified and treated directly. Toxins can be an underlying cause- such as chemical exposures, heavy metals, and mold, which can all build up in your body and create immune dysregulation. Inflammation can be another cause- what’s causing inflammation specifically for your body may include food sensitivities, toxin build-up, underlying infections, nutrient deficiencies, and old injuries. An underlying infection that has gone untreated can also trigger autoimmunity. Whereas, certain nutrient deficiencies can contribute to autoimmunity, as well.
Naturopathic medicine seeks to identify and treat the underlying causes that are specific to you. Often, when we do the proper detective work, we find that it is a combination of the previously mentioned underlying causes, unique to each person. When we can treat those causes, along with the attitudinal changes, that’s often how people become free of autoimmunity, which is not only possible, but also very common in the realm of naturopathic medicine.
If you or someone you know has an autoimmune condition (or more than one autoimmune condition), consider working with a naturopathic doctor to uncover the root causes of the autoimmunity, treat those causes directly, and watch how things transform. There is always hope.
