Granite Bay, Calif.- Assemblywoman Beth Gaines, R-Rocklin, recently honored the 2013 California Youth Shooting Sports Association State Champion Del Oro Varsity Trap Team and the 2013 United States Open Champion Granite Bay Varsity Trap Team during a special Assembly ceremony at the State Capitol.
“The young men and women on these teams are the very best at what they do,” Gaines said. “They deserve to be recognized for the commitment, discipline, and positive attitude it takes to achieve such a high level.”

Both teams’ Junior Varsity shooters were also honored during the ceremony, as Granite Bay won the JV State Championship and Del Oro was Runner-Up in the prestigious California “High 5 Series.”
“We have a very diverse team,” said Fred Jensen, Head Coach of the Del Oro Trap Team. “This is a sport in which anyone can compete. We have shooters that play football, baseball, basketball, wrestle, rugby, lacrosse, band, FFA and so on. We have several special needs shooters. Everyone shoots, everyone contributes.”
“The team’s commitment during the season is what carried them here today.” Granite Bay’s Head Coach Gary Lewis said. “Our organization is not about winning but youth development. But we develop the right kids and that’s why they win.”
The Del Oro High School Trap Team was founded in 2007 and prides itself on putting firearm safety first and foremost. They stress the importance of good sportsmanship and good manners, and shooters must maintain at least a 2.9 grade point average with no ‘D’s on their report card.
The Granite Bay High School Trap Team was founded in 2010. They also emphasize the importance of firearm safety while encouraging the spirit of competition in a team environment. The team focuses on youth development, specifically in the areas of patience, self-discipline, and fair play.
Assemblywoman Beth Gaines represents the 6th Assembly District, which includes portions of Placer, El Dorado, and Sacramento counties.
