AUBURN, CALIF. — In order to have proper accounting of Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) revenues, Placer County will be asking about 6000 property owners in the unincorporated western portion of the county if their properties are being used for rental purposes. The County’s Revenue Services Division will send letters to these property owners beginning August 27, 2008. The letters use information gleaned from the Placer County Assessor’s property records to ask property owners if what they own in Placer County is used as a rental.
Properties that rent for periods of 30 days or less are subject to the County’s Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) Ordinance. Properties that are used for short-term rentals are required to have a Transient Occupancy Tax Certificate Number, collect taxes and remit them to the County.
The review of TOT properties helps ensure fairness and competitiveness among local businesses and vacation properties that are required to collect Transient Occupancy Taxes. Past audits have shown that most properties conscientiously collect and report the taxes although some owners were not aware of the requirement.
