Rocklin HS and Granite Bay High School help fund school in Sudan

ImpactAVillage Builds its First School in Southern Sudan

Roseville, Calif. – ImpactAVillage, a Roseville-based non-profit whose mission is to improve education in impoverished villages of Africa,  has just completed building its first school in the village of Malek, Southern Sudan. Funds for the school were raised by donations from our local community in Placer County and the San Francisco Bay area. Last year, both Granite Bay High School and Rocklin High School sponsored educational fund-raisers to help build awareness and raise money for the school in Malek.

Deng Jongkuch, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan and a founding member of ImpactAVillage, spent the summer of 2009 in Malek directing the building of the 5-room primary school. Using funds from donations, Deng purchased cement, wood, roofing material, rebar and nails. Under the direction of a contractor hired by ImpactAVillage, the villagers worked together to clear the land, dig the foundation, make bricks and build the walls of the school. The new school is a replacement for the existing school that was made of mud. The school will house up to 300 students in primary grades.

‘We have done something many failed to do. To build a five classroom building in Southern Sudan is not an easy task. This would not have happened without the support of our community. Together we have impacted a village’, says Deng Jongkuch.

Deng Jongkuch, on behalf of ImpactAVillage will continue to speak and raise funds at local schools and churches. Funds will be used to purchase doors, windows, desks and chairs for the school.

The International Baccalaureate Team at Granite Bay High School and ImpactAVillage are coordinating the event and will be present at the restaurant in the evening to answer questions. Photos of the new school will be displayed. African beaded bracelets, wood serving utensils and photo note cards will be available for purchase. All proceeds go to ImpactAVillage to help improve the school in Malek, Southern Sudan.
