The Rocklin Historical Society has completed the restoration of the Saint Mary’s Chapel, Rocklin’s oldest public building. Amy Callahan and Jaymes Sorenson’s September 22 wedding will be the building’s first post-restoration ceremony.
In 1883 Gold Rush era Archbishop Joseph Alemany of the San Francisco Archdiocese dedicated the building as Saint Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church. The Catholics abandoned it in 1983 in favor of larger quarters at Saints Peter and Paul Church on Granite Drive. RHS saved the building from demolition in 2005 by moving it a quarter mile north to become the centerpiece of the new Heritage Park near Rocklin’s new train station at Rocklin Road and Front Street.
“We picked Historic St. Mary’s Church because as soon as we saw it, we saw the potential for how beautiful it could be once it was restored.” said Callahan, “We like the sense of history and longevity in being in such an old church.”
