Roseville, Calif.- On December 2, 2009, shortly after 10:00 a.m., Roseville Police Department officers responded to a bank robbery in the 1600 block of Douglas Boulevard. Officers arrived and were told a man had entered the bank and handed a teller a note demanding money. No weapon was seen however, the teller gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash and the suspect left the bank. According to witnesses, the suspect drove away in a cab.
Roseville detectives arrived and identified the cab company and the suspect. The suspect was identified as 52-year-old Steven Kenneth Holmes of Sacramento; a cab company employee. Shortly after noon, detectives tracked the suspect to a Sacramento motel in the 2800 block of Auburn Boulevard. While at the motel, detectives spotted Holmes and attempted to contact him. However, Holmes barricaded himself in his room and refused to come out.
Detectives requested the assistance of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, California Highway Patrol, and the Twin Rivers Police Department also arrived to lend assistance. The Sheriff’s Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT) was called out to talk to Holmes and negotiate his surrender. However, they were unable to convince Holmes to come out of the room. At 3:34 p.m., the Sheriff’s SWAT team fired two rounds of tear gas into the room; Holmes immediately surrendered and was arrested by SWAT team members.
Holmes complained of chest pain and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. When he is medically cleared for incarceration Holmes will be booked into jail by the Roseville Police Department.
