Roseville Man sentenced for choking, threatening wife

Misdemeanor charges of assault

Roseville, Calif.- A 64-year-old Roseville man has been placed on informal probation for three years for a domestic violence incident in which he choked his wife and threatened her with a hatchet and a walking stick.

Ronald James Gonzales was also sentenced to 216 days in the Placer County jail by Placer County Superior Court Judge Jeff Penney, who credited him with having already served the full amount of the incarceration.

Gonzales was also ordered to undergo counseling in a program aimed at correcting the behavior of a batterer.

The defendant was sentenced Dec. 9 after entering a plea of no contest to misdemeanor charges of assault by means of force and making verbal threats to shoot the victim with a gun.

A no contest plea means the defendant neither admits nor denies committing a crime but is willing to let the judge impose a sentence.

Gonzales was arrested March 24, 2008, after Roseville police responded to a 911 call at his home and found him trying to drive away.

His 62-year-old wife was found in the house with red marks on her neck from being choked, according to prosecutor Estelle Tansey of the Placer County District Attorney’s Office.

Among other conditions imposed in the sentencing by Judge Penney were that Gonzales cannot possess firearms or other weapons, must perform 20 hours of community service, pay $500 to domestic violence programs and must stay away from the victim.

Assistant District Attorney Scott Owens said domestic violence cases are taken ‘very seriously’ by his office.

‘The Roseville Police Department is to be commended for its thorough investigation of this particular case,’ Owens said.
