SACRAMENTO–United States Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced today that a federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment against THEODORE CHRISTOPHER REED, 41, of Sacramento, California. REED is charged with possession with intent to distribute over 50 grams of pure methamphetamine and over a kilogram of cocaine.
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Marysville Police Department, and the NET-5 (Narcotic Enforcement Team) a drug task force comprised of law enforcement from Sutter and Yuba Counties. According to Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez, who is prosecuting the case, REED was traveling by car through Marysville on Sunday, September 17, 2006 when a traffic stop of REED’s vehicle was conducted. REED fled from the scene and a high speed chase ensued. The packaged methamphetamine and cocaine were thrown from REED’s vehicle during the chase. REED was ultimately arrested by the Marysville Police Department.
If convicted, REED faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years in prison for the methamphetamine based charge, a minimum mandatory 5 years incarceration for the cocaine based charge, and a statutory maximum of up to life in prison. REED is expected to appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in Sacramento on Monday, December 4, 2006 at 2:00 p.m.
The United States Attorney’s Office noted that the charges are only accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
