San Juan Water District Completes Two Water Supply Projects

Granite Bay, Calif. – San Juan Water District (SJWD) has completed construction on two key drought mitigation projects: the Antelope Pump-Back Booster Pump Station project (Antelope Pump-Back) and the Barton Road Intertie.

These two projects have the capability to provide up to 16.4 million gallons of additional water supply per day to increase reliability for SJWD customers as we continue to face extreme drought conditions. If water supply from Folsom Lake, SJWD’s primary water supply source, were limited these projects would be able to provide enough water to serve the general needs of an average household within San Juan’s service areas.  In non-drought years, these projects can assist us with planned or emergency water transmissions as they arise.

The Antelope Pump-Back project was constructed in partnership with the Sacramento Suburban Water District (SSWD) and can provide an additional 14.4 million gallons of groundwater per day to customers/agencies relying on SJWD water. The new facility uses existing transmission pipelines normally used to deliver surface water to SSWD from the SJWD water treatment plant. The entire project was funded, designed and completed in less than two years and was completed on time and on budget with a portion of the project paid for by grant funds.  Using existing infrastructure helped minimize costs and supported such an aggressive completion schedule. The project increases water supply reliability, not only for SJWD’s retail service area, but the SJWD Wholesale service area as well.

The Barton Road Intertie project was completed in partnership with the Placer County Water Agency (PCWA). The project connects the two treated water systems allowing each agency to provide water to each other at a capacity of two million gallons per day, increasing water supply reliability for both agencies. The project consists of 2,700 feet of underground pipe within Barton Road, as well as an emergency pump and instrumentation and control systems.

“We’re very excited about the timely completion of these two projects and are proud to be able to complete them with our partners at SSWD and PCWA,” San Juan Water District General Manager Shauna Lorance said. “The Antelope Pump-Back project is especially important for our retail service area as this provides access to additional groundwater supplies which we did not have prior access to during critical drought emergencies.”

A total of $1.4 million of Proposition 84 grant funds were obtained to help offset the cost of both the $3.5 million Antelope Pump-Back project and the $1.5 million Barton Road Intertie project.  The remaining project costs were shared between the respective agencies.
