SourceSCOE

Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon has announced that, effective December 5, 2016, Richard Alan “Al” Rogers, Ed.D. will serve as Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) Deputy Superintendent. Rogers will replace current Deputy Superintendent Sue Stickel, who is retiring after a 40 year career in education.

Dr. Rogers served as the Chief Strategy Officer for the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD). In that capacity, he oversaw the district’s Strategy and Innovation Office, which includes several departments: Assessment, Research, and Evaluation; Charter Oversight; Grant Writing; Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP); and Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). During his career he also served as Superintendent of St. HOPE Charter Schools.

“We are delighted to have a proven leader like Al joining our team,” said Superintendent Gordon. “He has a strong background in public education and school administration with experience at every level. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role of Deputy Superintendent.”

Dr. Rogers earned an Ed.D. from the University of the Pacific. He also has two master’s degrees from Chapman University: one in school administration and another in curriculum and instruction. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history/Spanish from Sacramento State University, and an associate degree in languages/literature from Sacramento City College. He is the product of local schools, having graduated from Sacramento High School.

“Throughout my career in public education, I have enjoyed the opportunity to work closely with both students and educators,” Dr. Rogers said. “At SCOE, I look forward to continuing the work to help support pathways for success for students, teachers, support staff, and our local school districts in Sacramento County.”

Sue Stickel joined SCOE in 2006 and was appointed Deputy Superintendent in 2011. She previously served SCOE as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Intervention, as well as Director III of Curriculum, Instruction, and Intervention Services. She is a recognized expert in instruction, curriculum, and professional development.
