Seniors First’s Cafés Nourish Bodies and Spirits

Auburn, Calif. – During a rainy winter, when inclement weather can preclude a trip to the store or local food closet, it’s important to remind the elderly and their families that there are local options available for a warm meal and friendly face for inbound seniors.

A principle focus of Seniors First, the primary provider of elderly and senior services in Placer County, is its Senior Nutrition Program, through which seniors are educated and provided nutritious meals.  An important component of this program is Senior Cafés, which offer hot meals and companionship five days a week.

Cafés Provide Warm Meals, Social Interaction for Placer County Seniors

Seniors are encouraged to attend any of the eight neighborhood site locations for fresh, healthy and flavorful meals that are prepared and served in accordance with federal nutritional guidelines for seniors.  Meals are offered on a free-will donation basis with a suggested donation of $5.  However, those unable to make a donation are always welcome.

Besides nutritional value, the Cafés also provide socialization for its guests.  With many guests living alone and at risk of isolation, sometimes a visit to the Café is the only social interaction of the day.  Cafés are cozy and inviting with comfortable furnishings and staffed by friendly volunteers.

Seniors First Executive Director Jamee Horning commented, “Our Senior Café program is near and dear to my heart.  I began volunteering for Seniors First in a café years ago and will always remember the impact that a warm meal served by a friendly face can make for our senior guests, many of whom live alone.”

“We have recently changed our meal provider, and are excited about the improved meal quality and enhanced menu options. A favorite of our guests are the fresh green salads we now have available. They’ve been a big hit,” she added.

Seniors First is pleased to offer free transportation for ambulatory, inbound seniors to the Café locations through the Door-to-Door Rides Program.

Senior Café locations include:

  • Auburn – Dewitt, 11577 E Avenue
  • Colfax – Methodist Church, 59 W. Church Street (Mon, Wed, Fri only)
  • Lincoln – United Methodist Church, 629 I Street
  • Rocklin – Rolling Oaks, 5725 Shannon Bay Drive
