Sewer Fee Increase would Impact Thousands

The North Auburn Municipal Advisory Council will receive a presentation Tuesday, April 9 on a proposed fee increase that would affect approximately 5,000 properties served by Sewer Maintenance District 1.

Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and the presentation on the proposed fee increase is set for 7 p.m.  The meeting will be held in the Planning Commission Chambers at the Community Development Resource Agency building, 3091 County Center Drive. County Center Drive is a short street near the intersection of Bell Road and Richardson Drive in the Placer County Government Center, a complex commonly known as the DeWitt Center.

At Tuesday’s meeting, MAC members will receive an informational presentation on the proposed rate increase, but are not scheduled to take any action. For ratepayers, Tuesday’s meeting will be an opportunity to learn more about the proposed fee increase.

The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the proposed rate increase at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7. Board members will also consider written protests from ratepayers. The meeting will take place in the Board of Supervisors Chambers at the Placer County Administrative Center, 175 Fulweiler Ave. in Auburn.

For single-family households served by SMD 1, sewer-service charges would increase from the current $82 per month to $95.78 per month effective July 1. The proposed fee increase is needed to fund construction and initial operation of a regional sewer project that involves:

  • Decommissioning an existing SMD 1 treatment plant that does not meet current state and federal wastewater treatment standards,
  • Constructing a pump station and about 13 miles of pipeline to convey wastewater from North Auburn to Lincoln; and
  • Expanding the City of Lincoln’s treatment plant to handle the additional wastewater.

Last month, the county Facility Services Department mailed a letter to approximately 5,000 property owners notifying them of the public hearing on the proposed fee increase.
