Neighbor fires shotgun blast into apartment
Kody Lee Hunter, 31, was arrested for felony negligent discharge of a firearm around 8 p.m. after the 34-year-old victim called 911 to report that a bullet had come through his apartment wall and struck his television.
The victim initially thought his television had malfunctioned when he heard a loud noise and saw smoke coming out of the TV. The man had been sitting at his desk, working on his computer when the shotgun round came within inches of striking him, a deputy reported.
When deputies arrived at the apartment complex, Hunter walked from the building and refused to comply with a deputy’s orders to stop. He got into his truck and started the engine until he was ordered out of his truck at gunpoint. Hunter initially denied any knowledge of a gun being fired but eventually told deputies that he accidentally fired a round from a shotgun while trying to render it safe. He had recently acquired the weapon, he said.
In Hunter”s apartment deputies found a one-inch hole under a wall poster. On a nearby wall, they found four torn corners of the poster, which Hunter had ripped down and placed over the bullet hole. Immediately after the round was fired, Hunter wrapped the shotgun in a blanket and placed it in the bed of a relative’s truck. The relative left the area before deputies arrived, but was called back to the scene and the gun was retrieved.
Damage to the victim’s television was estimated at $1,000. Hunter remains in custody at the Placer County Jail. Bail is set at $25,000.
