South Placer Rotary Donation Supports Former Foster Youth

Rocklin, Calif – The South Placer Rotary has donated $10,000 to help establish a new housing fund at Sierra College to assist former foster youth attending the college.

Rotary President Paul Ruhkala and Past President Mark Siemens recently presented Sierra College President Willy Duncan with the check in the amount of $10,000 to help support former foster youth.
“Sierra College does a tremendous job in meeting the needs of former foster youth,” Siemens said. “As a Rotary, we decided to make the former foster youth housing fund our No. 1 priority for this past year. We are excited to be able to partner with the College and the Sierra College Foundation.”

The Rotary’s contribution was made possible by supporters of the Rotary’s events and fundraisers throughout the year, including sponsorships by GBD Communities, Five Star Auto Care, Energy 2001, Halldin Public Relations and Kniesel’s Collision Center.

The Sierra College Foundation, in partnership with numerous community organizations and businesses, provides a number of services to former foster youth, including giving more than 100 care-packs to new and returning students who were previously served by the State’s foster care system.

The packs are filled with basic hygiene items, school supplies, computer flash drives, vouchers for books, calculators, food gift cards, quilts and pillow cases, etc. For students who don’t have a laptop, the Foundation works to provide a gently-used laptop. If you are interested in how you can help, please call (916) 660-7020 for more information.

The main objective of Rotary is service – in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.  Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today’s most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty, hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth; educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals; and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self.”

If you are interested in finding out more about Rotary and giving back to our community, we would welcome the opportunity to meet you at one of our club meetings.  While we spend a lot of time devoted to service, we endeavor to have fun and fellowship at our weekly meetings. The South Placer Rotary Club meets at noon each Wednesday at the Rocklin Golf Club, 4201 Midas Avenue Rocklin, CA 95677.
