Auburn, Calif. – Museums throughout Placer County will offer free admission on select days all summer as the Heritage Trail Museums Tour returns for its ninth year.
Organized by Placer County Museums, the tour has become a local family tradition, helping connect communities with the rich and varied history of Placer County. In previous years, the tour was held during just one weekend in August. In response to popular demand, free admission days are now spread throughout the summer to offer more opportunities to enjoy as many museums as possible. Different museums will offer free admission on different days, largely on Saturdays.
“Placer County has such a fascinating history, and it is lovingly celebrated across a treasure of charming and thoughtful museums county-wide,” said Ralph Gibson, Placer County Museums administrator. “By spreading the Heritage Trail out over the summer, our hope is that anyone looking for something fun and educational to do will have the opportunity to enjoy one or several of them any weekend they’d like.”
A total of 24 museums are participating, from Roseville all the way to North Lake Tahoe. Free days are clustered geographically to allow for easy hopping between museums in a day. The tour continues this weekend in Auburn with free days at the Bernhard and Gold Rush museums and the historic Benton Welty School Room, and ends Sept. 4 with a free weekend at the Forest Hill Divide Museum in Foresthill.
Fun, family-friendly activities are spread throughout the free weekends, including live music, historical reenactments and much more. Trail visitors are also encouraged to pick up a ‘Get Up and Go’ card at any participating museum; those who fill the card with stamps from at least 16 of the participating museums will be eligible for a gift basket drawing.
