The selection process considered works from more than 350 publishers and the recipients were selected from 1400 entries. The winners were determined by a panel of librarians and booksellers. Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners, as well as Editor’s Choice Prizes for Fiction and Nonfiction were announced at a special program at the American Library Association Conference (ALA) Annual Conference in New Orleans on June 25, 2011.

ForeWord Reviews’ Book of the Year Awards program was established to bring increased attention to librarians and booksellers of the literary and graphic achievements of independent publishers and their authors. ForeWord is the only review trade journal devoted exclusively to books from independent publishing houses.

Since 1998, ForeWord Reviews has been one of the publishing industry’s most respected print magazine and online review service for readers, booksellers, book buyers, publishing insiders, and librarians. ForeWord is published six times a year and each issue reaches an international audience of librarians and booksellers.

ForeWord influences the buying decisions of booksellers and librarians across the United States and Canada.  Additionally, ForeWord is represented annually at the Beijing Book Fair, the Frankfurt Book Fair, the London International Book Fair, and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, as well as at BookExpo America, and the American Library Association Conference (ALA).

In 2002, the Sierra College Press was formed to publish Standing Guard: Telling our Stories as part of the award-winning Standing Guard Project’s examination of Japanese-American Internment during World War II. The Sierra College Press publishes books, electronic journals, pamphlets, posters, and other materials and is the first full-service academic press operated by a community college in the United States.
