Truckee, Calif.- The Truckee Donner Recreation & Park District (TDRPD) Board is moving forward with its plan to build a performing arts theatre for the Truckee community.
The TDRPD, partnering with the Arts & Culture Council of Truckee Tahoe (ACCTT), spent over a year conducting research and obtaining input on what the community and region wanted and needed in a performing arts center.

A recent feasibility study, conducted by Webb Management Inc., pointed to the need for a Truckee-based performing arts center based on the lack of quality venues in the area. After the study was completed, a community workshop was held and a subsequent working group was created to determine specific requirements for the Truckee theatre. Several scenarios were suggested for the theatre, including a standard proscenium style 250-seat theatre.
A decision was made at TDRPD’s Board meeting on August, 13, that a proscenium theatre, located in downtown Truckee, would best meet the preferred needs of the community and arts groups.
“The 250-seat facility will bring significant economic and community benefits to the downtown area,” stated Rich Valentine, of ACCTT.
Truckee Donner Park and Recreation District hired Venutech to assist with the next steps pertaining to the architect selection process. The San Francisco based firm will begin work later this month.
The TDRPD has committed $3 million dollars towards the funding for the project, and an additional $3-$5 million for the theatre will need to be raised from other sources. The project will use the existing community center in the downtown area utilizing current rooms for various cultural activities. A visual art space is also part of the plan. The existing auditorium in the building will be taken down and replaced with the new 250-seat performing arts theatre.
