Volunteer Need on the Rise for Senior Services

Volunteers Crucial to Success of Programs

Roseville, Calif. – As the elderly population in our region continues to grow, Seniors First, Placer County’s premier nonprofit organization focused on providing services for seniors, is experiencing an increased demand for its programs.

Experts estimate that Placer County’s elderly population will increase proportionately with the total population, directly affecting the service area and impact of Seniors First.

Seniors First’s roster of programs – most of which are reliant on volunteers – aims to increase a senior’s quality of life:

  • MyRides – transportation to medical appointments and daily errands
  • MyMeals – delivery of hot meals to homebound seniors
  • Safety Repair & Home Modification – small but significant handyman projects such as ramp and smoke detector installation to make home-life safer
  • Friendly Visitor – regular visits with a homebound senior
  • Recreation & Respite – social daycare for seniors with physical or memory impairments

As the service area continues to expand, so does the need for volunteers.  “Our mission is to keep seniors healthy and independent for as long as possible.  By getting them to medical appointments and providing hot meals and companionship, we are helping them thrive in their later years.  But none of our programs can be successful without volunteers,” remarked Seniors First Executive Director Jamee Horning.

Sallysue Stein of Auburn, a driver for MyMeals, has been a dedicated volunteer for several years.  “The Seniors First staff makes it so easy.  I have it on my weekly calendar, make a quick stop at the kitchen to pick up the meals and my list of clients, and I’m off.”  Stein added, “Some clients have been on my route for years now so I’ve heard about the births of their grandchildren, loss of a spouse, so many milestones.  I love zipping around town and knowing I’m brightening someone’s day.”

As Seniors First serves clients from Roseville to Colfax, volunteers are needed throughout South Placer County.  Reuben Johnson of Granite Bay enjoys the camaraderie of volunteering for MyRides.  “Through Seniors First, I have had the opportunity to meet people that have become great friends and part of my extended family.  In fact, they have helped me in my relationship with my own aging parents,” commented Johnson.

Horning notes that volunteers create their own schedules and are eligible for mileage reimbursement.  “Whether an hour a month or several times per week, we have a need for anyone willing to make a lasting difference in our community.”
