Granite Bay, Calif.- Customers in San Juan Water District’s retail service area reduced their August water use by 37 percent, bringing their cumulative reductions since the governor enacted mandatory restrictions to 41 percent.
“These are great numbers,” said Shauna Lorance, general manager. “But we know that as the temperatures continue to drop into the fall it will be harder for our customers to meet our mandated 36 percent cutbacks.”
The district has exceeded the governor’s target since the mandates became effective in June. Because the reporting period lasts through February 2016, staff has been working with customers to boost conservation during hot, dry summer months.
“Just like all hot, inland climates in California, our water use dips during the cooler, winter months as irrigation needs decrease,” said Lisa Brown, customer service manager. “That means we need to reduce more during the summer so we go into winter exceeding the governor’s mandate.”
It will be very important for customers to reduce irrigation even more in the fall and winter and turn it off when no longer needed.
“Our customers have made great strides to cut their water use, but we need to keep it up,” said Brown. “It is getting harder and harder to maintain a 36% reduction as cooler weather approaches. We ask all of our customers to continue their efforts to help us meet our substantial reduction target.”
