Placer County Launching New Digital Pet Licensing

Licensing events to also offer free rabies vaccine

Auburn, Calif. – Starting in July, Placer County pet owners who license their dogs will receive a new tag embedded with digital technology designed to help keep them safe and sound 24/7.

The stylish and durable new tags, produced by the company PetHub, are linked to a free online profile of the animal, where owners can update existing contact information and enter additional phone numbers, email addresses, family and veterinary contacts and more. The service also comes with a 24/7 call center.

July is Lost Pet Prevention Month nationwide. It’s common for dogs to frolic outside in the summer months, but owners are encouraged to take steps to prevent their animals from getting lost – especially around the Fourth of July when crowds and fireworks can spook them.

“Of the 1,700 stray pets that came through our doors in 2017, 85 percent arrived without any type of identification and less than half of those were reunited with their owners. Many more pets could have been returned to their owners had they been wearing identification,” said Placer animal program manager Katie Ingram. “Finding and retrieving a lost pet can be a time-consuming and costly process for owners. These new license tags will give owners peace of mind, knowing that should their pet get loose they have a much better shot at being reunited quickly and without hassle.

More than 96 percent of lost animals with PetHub tags are returned to their owners within 24 hours, many without ever entering a shelter.

Online

To obtain one of the new license tags, starting July 1 pet owners living in the Placer County service area can simply visit the new, user-friendly website at https://www.placer.ca.gov/1921/Licensing-Fees to license their dog (a requirement) or cat (optional).

New or renewed one-year licenses will cost $21 for a spayed or neutered dog and $42 for unaltered dogs — and can also be purchased in person or by mail. Those with an existing license can upgrade to a digital tag for just $7. Owners will then have immediate access to register their new license for free through PetHub to take advantage of all of the benefits the new license offers.

“It’s a one-stop shop so pet owners can take this step to protect their animals easily, and from the comfort of their own home,” Ingram said.

Rather than going through the renewal process each year, owners can also save time and money by purchasing a three-year license at a substantially discounted rate of $50 for altered dogs and $112 for unaltered dogs. Dogs must have a three-year rabies vaccine to be eligible for the three-year license.

Animals within the city limits of Auburn, Rocklin and Roseville are licensed by their respective city rather than the county.

The county will host two licensing events in July where residents who get one of the new licenses can also receive a free rabies vaccination and engraved pet tag for their animal.

Animals will also be available for adoption.
