7 vintage songs when the heatwave arrives and the mercury soars

Just for fun! Feelgood tunes when the triple digits hit

Roseville, Calif. – Another blistering heatwave is on tap for Northern California this Labor Day week as triple-digits appear to be settling in for an extended visit. Roseville and the surrounding region could top 112 degrees this week.

For many, that means either hunkering down in their air-conditioned homes, a waterside respite or maybe even a trip out of “Dodge” to cooler climes. No matter your plans, a light and timely playlist is essential for music fueled fans. Songs that may not necessarily be about the weather, they often become linked due to their catchy title or tune. Either way, it’s all good for a few smiles. Keep cool!

Hot Vintage Songs

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas ~ Heat Wave (1963)

A song NOT about the weather, it’s just one of those classics that seems to be on autoplay in our brains every time it gets really hot. Great energy and feelgood vibes that never fails to deliver smiles. For fun, check out The Who covering it in 1967.

Sly and the Family Stone ~ Hot Fun In The Summertime (1969)

Few songs evoke the carefree joys of summer quite like Hot Fun in the Summertime. An essential on any summer play list.

Van Halen ~ Ice Cream Man (1978)

Heated debates over this album being the greatest debut rock album of all-time aside, it’s Van Halen rocking out about the Ice Cream Man. In the words of David Lee Roth, “Guaranteed to satisfy”.

Bob Marley ~ Sun is Shining (1978) remix (2015)

No artist has ever defined a musical genre quite like Bob Marley has done with reggae. Crank this up at any gathering and watch as smiles begin to wash over the room. The Yes King remix is a standout version.

Led Zeppelin – Hots on for Nowhere (1976)

“I was burned in the heat of the moment, No, it coulda been the heat of the day” and other assorted hippie dippy lyrics off this groovy masterpiece from Led Zeppelin’s Presence.

Judas Priest – Wild Nights, Hot & Crazy Days (1986)

Beneath all that heavy metal imagery, Judas Priest delivers many of the catchiest riffs with an amazing melodic sensibility. 1986’s Turbo album stands as one of their high watermarks in both song and production.

The Power Station – Some Like it Hot (1985)

A terrific supergroup in the heyday of big hair with over-the-top, and discordant videos. Once upon a time, MTV was the “go-to” place for band exposure. Imagine that!
