Anhydrous ammonia gas
Roseville, ,Calif. – Roseville Fire Department’s Hazmat Task Force 1, under the command of Battalion Chief Kevin Morris, have completed the needed repairs and have stopped the anhydrous ammonia release in the JR Davis rail yard.
The release was reported about 2 am yesterday by Union Pacific workers who smelled the ammonia but were not contaminated.
Firefighters from the hazmat task force responded and determined that the release was caused by a faulty gasket. The leak was small and required firefighters to replace a gasket which they had in their inventory. Firefighters were able to completely stop the leak by about 7:20 am.
Anhydrous ammonia is a gas form of ammonia and can be detected by the human nose at about 2 parts per million. Although citizens may have been able to smell the ammonia gas, the concentration of gas never increased to dangerous levels outside of the rail yard boundaries.
