Roseville, Calif. – The City of Roseville’s Environmental Utilities Department announced drop-off sites for used syringes and lancets, known as “sharps,” now available to Placer County residents.
‘Sharps’ are commonly used at home for people with medical conditions such as diabetes. Starting Sept. 1, state law prohibits sharps from being disposed of in refuse bins.

Those using the drop-off sites should place their used sharps in a sealed rigid container prior to transporting them.
The announcement of the two drop-off sites is the first phase in the development of convenient and safe options for disposal of sharps in Placer County. Future sharps disposal options are being developed by the Placer Regional Recycling Group, an informal body made up of staff from the cities of Auburn, Colfax, Lincoln, Loomis, Rocklin, Roseville, Auburn Placer Disposal Service and Placer County.
‘Keeping sharps out of the trash helps prevent accidental injuries to our employees who handle trash locally and the workers at the Materials Recovery Facility,’ said Derrick Whitehead, Director of Roseville’s Environmental Utilities. ‘By providing safe and easy disposal options as well as emphasizing public education, we are hoping to reduce the number of accidents related to sharps exposure.’
Residents served by the City of Roseville and Auburn Placer Disposal Service will also receive inserts in their utility bills announcing the two new drop-off locations starting in September.
