Roseville Resident is New Physician-In-Chief at Sacramento Medical Center

Robert Azevedo assumes new role

Sacramento, Calif.- Robert Azevedo, MD, assumed his new role as physician-in-chief of the Sacramento Medical Center on July 1. He replaced Jack Rozance, MD, who stepped down when his term expired after 18 years in the position.

A practicing obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Azevedo has responsibility for medical services at the 287-bed hospital on Morse Avenue and its satellite medical offices in Sacramento and Davis. Partnering with Kaiser Foundation Hospital/Health Plan leaders, he oversees the health care of more than 170,000 Kaiser Permanente members.

“I am honored to have been selected,” Dr. Azevedo said. “As the leader in health care, we are well positioned to expand upon the great success of The Permanente Medical Group and Kaiser Permanente. I am excited at the opportunities ahead and look forward to working with the physicians, nurses, and staff to continue great care of our members and to lead us into the future of health care for the Sacramento region.”

Dr. Azevedo, 51, joined The Permanente Medical Group from 1992 to 1996, and then returned to the medical group in 2001. He has served in several leadership roles. Azevedo was the assistant physician-in-chief for Women’s and Children’s Services and Physician Human Resources since 2004. Prior to that, he was chief of Women’s Health from 2002 to 2004.

Under his leadership, Kaiser Permanente opened its 174-bed Women and Children’s Center at the Roseville Medical Center campus in 2009. It is the largest birthing center in the Greater Sacramento area.

Dr. Azevedo did his undergraduate training at the University of California, Davis, and received his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. His residency in obstetrics and gynecology was completed at UC Davis Medical Center.

Dr. Azevedo, a Roseville resident, and his wife of 25 years, Tina, have three grown children.
