A small but mighty team of teenage Roseville Police Department explorers took top honors and won admirers at a southern California law enforcement explorer competition last weekend. Five members of the Roseville Police Department’s Explorer Scout Post–the second smallest group at the competition–competed against 23 other explorer posts from California and Arizona in the Kern County Memorial Explorer Competition in Tehachapi on May 16-17. The Roseville team brought home nine trophies, including first place overall.
Roseville Police Officer Daniel Stokes, a post adviser who accompanied the team to the competition, said, “I was approached by many of the other advisers at the competition, who commented on how impressed they were by our explorers and their performance. Each of our explorers represented Roseville well.”
Danny Timoney, Ricky Hinds, Cameron Bal, Brandon Simmons and Jason Simmons traveled to Tehachapi to represent the Roseville Police Explorer Post. No City funds were used for the trip, which was paid for by the explorers and the post’s fund-raising efforts. The explorers competed in physical fitness and agility events, and were also tested for their response to various law enforcement scenarios. The Roseville team took first place honors in the traffic stop and stolen vehicle scenarios, second place in the obstacle course and suspicious person scenario, and fourth place in four other events. Their cumulative points earned them an overall first place in the competition.
Roseville’s Explorer Post is a volunteer organization of Roseville teens between the ages of 14 and 20 who want to explore a career in law enforcement.  The teens receive training in law enforcement skills, ride along with police officers and observe them on the job, and help the department and community in many ways.
