$198,000 Gift to Shriners Hospitals for Children

Anonymous Donors Utilize Placer Community Foundation

Sacramento, CA- Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California has received a gift for $198,000 to benefit its pediatric hand program. The gift to the hospital was made at the direction of anonymous donors, who have a personalized charitable fund at Placer Community Foundation (PCF).

“We are very pleased to make this significant grant on behalf of our donors,” stated Jessica Hubbard, PCF Philanthropic Services Manager. “The donors established a Donor Advised Fund at Placer Community Foundation so they could take time to meet with the team at Shriners and learn how the program will benefit so many children now and in the future. It is an honor to facilitate such thoughtful and lasting giving.”

“We are grateful to the caring, anonymous donors at Placer Community Foundation for their commitment and vision”

Shriners Hospitals for Children is a leading provider of pediatric hand and upper extremity care in Northern California. The funds will be used to support the Riordan – Manske Hand Fund, named in memory of Daniel C. Riordan, M.D., and Paul R. Manske, M.D., orthopaedic surgeons who were pioneers in pediatric hand surgery and instrumental in developing surgical techniques and advancing clinical outcomes through research.

“Both Dr. Riordan and Dr. Manske worked at Shriners Hospitals for Children and trained many of the pediatric hand surgeons practicing in the United States today, including three of the four hand surgeons at our hospital in Sacramento,” said Michelle James, M.D., a noted hand surgeon and chief of orthopaedics at the Northern California Shriners Hospital. “The grant is a huge contribution toward an endowment that will support pediatric hand and upper extremity research at Shriners Hospital, especially multi-center research. Many of the conditions we treat are rare, and we collaborate with other pediatric hand surgeons working at other Shriners Hospitals to research new and innovative ways to advance care,” she added.

“The positive community impact of this donation will grow for many years to come.”

The pediatric hand and upper extremity program embodies the hospital’s threefold mission of treatment, teaching and research. Thousands of children with congenital malformations, brachial plexus birth injury and other conditions affecting the function of the hands, arms and shoulders are treated at the Northern California Shriners Hospital each year. The hospital is home to one of only five pediatric hand surgery fellowship programs in the United States, providing fully-trained hand surgeons an opportunity to learn and practice the pediatric specialty. Under the direction of Dr. James, the hospital is involved both local and multi-center research studies to advance care and promote positive outcomes.

“We are grateful to the caring, anonymous donors at Placer Community Foundation for their commitment and vision,” said Alan Anderson, director of development at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California. “The spirit of community enrichment is shared by both Shriners Hospitals and the Placer Community Foundation. This generous gift will enrich the lives of kids treated at our hospital, giving them an opportunity to live life to their full potential and actively engage in the communities in which they live.

“The contribution is especially meaningful when one considers that a high percentage of the children treated at our hospital live in Placer County and neighboring communities. And it is compounded by the fact that it will support research that will be incorporated into best practices by surgeons working throughout California and the United States,” Anderson noted. “The positive community impact of this donation will grow for many years to come.”
