San Diego Arts and Culture Neighborhood Impact

New! Interactive Map Showcases Impact

SAN DIEGO – The City of San Diego’s Commission for Arts and Culture has updated its online, interactive map of San Diego that identifies the unique characteristics, venues and reach of City-funded nonprofit arts and culture organizations. New features include a landing page that will house maps and annual data, and a side-by-side comparative mapping tool that illustrates data differences between fiscal years, beginning with 2019 and 2020.

It shows how vital these organizations are to a strong and dynamic San Diego centered on culture and creativity.

Jonathon Glus, Executive Director of the Commission for Arts and Culture

The maps illustrate the meaningful impact arts and culture organizations have in the City. As the data is updated annually they can measure impacts over time and help drive informed decision-making to strengthen the creative life of all San Diego neighborhoods.

“The maps highlight the reach of arts and culture organizations across the city and the value they bring to the communities we serve,” said Jonathon Glus, Executive Director of the Commission for Arts and Culture. “It shows how vital these organizations are to a strong and dynamic San Diego centered on culture and creativity.”

LOCAL OUTREACH

Data highlights for Fiscal Year 2020 include outreach to 256 schools, 31 libraries, 21 parks, seven recreation centers and 268 other venues totaling 583 unique sites and engagement with nearly 600,000 participants.

San Diego Bay

Using the mapping tool, it was discovered that a museum centrally located in the City impacted 83 various sites, 66 of which were outside the museum’s council district. A music education organization from Council District 3 reached every council district and a total of 58 school sites. A performing arts organization in Council District 6 provided services in every council district and placed emphasis on outreach to social service agencies and under-resourced communities. These examples demonstrate the impact of arts and culture and how organizations sustain and support growth citywide.

On each map, colored icons distinguish organizations and venues so users can explore the map by simply selecting an icon, using the search bar or examining by City Council district. The map includes data points with relevant information such as an organization’s mission statement, address, website link and locations of activity.

The City of San Diego’s Commission for Arts and Culture serves in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Council to promote, encourage and increase support for the region’s artistic and cultural assets, integrating arts and culture into community life and showcasing San Diego as an international tourist destination.
