Big Beautiful Bill Act threatens to make life even harder
Roseville, Calif.- Across Placer, El Dorado, and Nevada counties, families are already stretching every dollar to meet their basic needs. Food, housing, and medical care have become more expensive.
In our rural communities, those challenges are compounded by distance, limited services, and lack of access. Now, the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act threatens to make life even harder.
Millions impacted
This new legislation includes deep cuts to the nation's safety net. SNAP, known as CalFresh in California, is facing a 20 percent reduction in funding. An estimated 22.3 million families nationwide will be impacted, including thousands of households right here in the foothills.
At Feeding the Foothills (FTF), we've seen firsthand how vital CalFresh is to our community. In the past year, we've helped local residents apply for these benefits. Of the applicants we've assisted, 42.1 percent have been approved, with an average monthly benefit of $338.88. That translates to $51,456 in benefits and a total estimated economic impact of $296,615 within our three-county region. In real terms, that means more than 32,000 CalFresh meals placed on kitchen tables for our neighbors.
Seniors, disabilities…not just numbers
These are not just numbers. They represent single parents, seniors on fixed incomes, people with disabilities, college students studying to better their lives, and working families doing their best to get by. CalFresh benefits help keep households afloat, reduce reliance on emergency food, and allow people to prioritize their health instead of simply surviving.
FTF is committed to supporting those most impacted by these changes. We continue to help residents apply for CalFresh through one-on-one assistance, outreach events, and our bilingual online resources at feedingthefoothills.org/calfresh and feedingthefoothills.org/en-espanol. Our goal is to make sure no one falls through the cracks.
We can't meet this moment alone. As FTF faces growing demand, what was once a temporary solution is now becoming a primary source of nutrition for too many and we simply can't keep pace.
