Last year’s effort returned more than $440,000 to Placer County families in need
Roseville, Calif. – Want to give back to the community in the new year? Placer County’s Free Tax Prep program (also known as VITA) is currently seeking volunteers for the 2026 tax season.
The program, operating in conjunction with United Way and the IRS, offers free tax preparation assistance to eligible people in Placer County making $69,000 or less.
Program volunteers work one-on-one with clients to help them file taxes and maximize refunds. Beyond tax preparation, volunteers can also serve as greeters or quality reviewers. Volunteers have the option to serve at either in-person or virtual sites, during the following tentative windows from February 2 to April 3, 2026:

No prior experience is needed
No prior experience is needed to volunteer, as in-person training is provided beginning January 7. Volunteer schedules are flexible, with as little as six hours a week or up to 30. Self-study or virtual training options are available for those with prior experience or who cannot attend trainings in person. Coordinators will also be available to assist volunteers with any questions.
Last year, the program generated $440,583 in state and federal refunds for Placer County families.
“Volunteers gain practical experience and the reward of knowing they’ve helped neighbors achieve financial stability,” said Human Services Director Greg Geisler.
