Best Spring Hikes Near Sacramento: Monte Vista Trail in El Dorado Hills

Scenic river vistas, peaceful shoreline access and towering oaks make Monte Vista Trail a perfect Northern California escape.

El Dorado Hills, Calif. – Visions of a distant adventure were quickly tempered as the morning hours slipped away beneath a pile of work. We needed a new destination — something scenic and fun, yet not too far away.

With Folsom Lake recently rising to normal levels and wildflowers still in bloom, we conducted a quick internet search. It was promptly decided that we would head for the eastern shores of the South Fork of the American River just before it fulfills its mission of keeping Folsom Lake satiated. Next stop: Monte Vista Trail in El Dorado Hills.

The approximate 3-mile round trip is rated easy, with a few minor ups and downs. The trail is wide and easy to navigate. Be sure to take a screenshot of the trails and general directions prior to departure, as some paths are unmarked and branch off in different directions.

Scenery

This fun hike offers changing scenery that includes woodlands, majestic oaks, grassy meadows, and amazing views of the South Fork as it horseshoes its way toward Folsom Lake. The beach sits on the edge of a peninsula that captures some of the region’s best sights. During our visit, the water was tranquil and warm enough for an extended swim, while a few boats drifted by in the distance.

You can easily extend your hike by continuing onto the Brown’s Ravine Assembly Area Trail, located another 10-plus miles beyond. This trail offers exceptional river and lake views. We explored farther until the trail became somewhat narrow and overgrown. At that point, we decided to retrace our steps and head back to the car.

Monte Vista Trail

  • Easy 3-mile round trip with additional trail options
  • Cell service worked well for us
  • Hat and sunscreen recommended
  • Be prepared to get wet!
  • About 40 minutes from West Roseville

TRAVEL TIP: If you rely on Google Maps to get you there, you may find yourself speaking with locals at a dead-end road called Easy Lane. Instead of turning onto Easy Lane, continue north and you’ll soon encounter a gravel parking lot on your left across from Falcon’s Crest. Park there and gear up — you’ll find the trailhead sign nearby.

Lunch at El Dorado Saloon & Grill

We worked up an appetite following the hike and stumbled upon a gem. The El Dorado Saloon & Grill, located at 879 Embarcadero Drive, serves up scrumptious eats and cold brews alongside terrific specials. It’s a fun place to dine outdoors on a large deck shaded by a canopy of giant oaks. The super-friendly staff help create an enjoyable experience.

Monte Vista Trail in El Dorado Hills offers an opportunity to soak in some of the region’s incredible beauty. Top it off with lunch and a cold one at El Dorado Saloon, and you’ve got the makings of a perfect day.

happy trails!
