Corolla Cross adds to Toyota's lofty hybrid reputation

A smart fit for first-time buyers and downsizers alike

Roseville, Calif. – The 2026 Corolla Cross hybrid is an ideal vehicle for young people on the go or older folks entering their retirement years who want dependable transportation to perform their mostly around-town errands.

With a starting price of roughly $29,000 and enviable fuel economy averaging 42 mpg, it's easy to see the practical side of purchasing the subcompact SUV. It's also safe, stylish, reliable, and has a generous list of standard features like all-wheel drive.

Fills the gap

In the Toyota lineup, the Cross fills the gap between the smaller subcompact CHR and the company cash-cow RAV4, which starting this year is offered as a hybrid only.

The Corolla name is hardly a new one. The Toyota Corolla is a compact sedan/hatchback that has served the company well for nearly five-plus decades. Although its highest sales years were between 2003-08 when it ranged between 341,000 and 387,000, it remains a good product with sales of 224,571 in 2025. A year ago, Cross hybrid sales were 90,947.

Making its U.S. debut in 2022, the Cross hybrid is superior to the gas-powered Cross. The hybrid has standard all-wheel drive, additional horsepower (196 hp vs. 169 hp for the Cross), better fuel economy, an appealing body-colored front grille, and sport-tuned suspension.

Note the starting sticker price of the front-wheel drive Corolla Cross is roughly $25,000, while the hybrid version starts at approximately $29,000.

Performance, Fuel Econmy, & Safety

Performance is not one of the strong points of either the Cross hybrid or the gas-powered model. But the hybrid does go 0-60 mph in around 7.9 seconds, nearly two seconds faster than the Cross (9.6 seconds). The hybrid towing capacity of 1,500 pounds is decent for a subcompact SUV.

Where the Cross hybrid really excels is fuel economy. It gets a whopping 39-46 mpg, much better than the gas-powered Cross (31-33 mpg) as well as most other small hybrid SUVs.

We enjoyed the handling, comfort and excellent maneuverability of the Cross hybrid. It delivers a smooth, comfortable ride and is ideal for around-town driving, plus it's easy to slip into tight parking spaces.

Standard driver safety features include pre-collision and pedestrian detection; lane departure alert; steering and lane tracing assist; automatic high beams; road sign assist; radar cruise control; and more.

AT A GLANCE – 2026 TOYOTA COROLLA CROSS HYBRID

  • Performance: three electric motors, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, 196 horsepower
  • Mileage estimate: 39-46 mpg
  • Price estimate: $29,300 to $33,400
  • Warranty: 3 years/36,000 miles; drivetrain: 5 years/60,000 miles; roadside assistance: 2 years/25,000; corrosion: 5 years/unlimited

Interior

The hybrid cabin is easy to get acquainted with due to its practical layout and the ease of learning its subtle nuances. It provides a good mix of touchscreen controls and buttons, something we prefer. The SUV comes standard with a 10.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and SiriusXM satellite radio.

Front seating is comfortable and spacious, but the second row is lacking good leg room. The cargo area of 21.5 cubic feet is less than the Cross (25 cubes), yet still generous enough for grocery runs or accommodating several suitcases.

For years now, Toyota has prided itself on creating excellent hybrids. And the 2026 Toyota Cross hybrid can be added to the list. It has a sizable list of enviable qualities that make it one of the top subcompact models on the market.
