Roseville, Calif. – A new, dedicated clinic for pediatric lipid disorders opens today in Roseville. The clinic is the only one of its kind in inland Northern California.
The UC Davis Health clinic offers care for children with abnormal cholesterol levels, elevated triglycerides and lipoprotein (a) levels and other complex lipid disorders. Care will also be provided to children with secondary causes of lipid abnormalities, such as diabetes and kidney disease.
Lipid disorders often have a genetic cause. Children with lipid disorders often have a family history of early onset of stroke or heart attack.
Diagnose and treat lipid disorders
"The goal of this clinic is to diagnose and treat lipid disorders to achieve normal levels through a combination of dietary and lifestyle changes and carefully monitored prescription medications. We hope this will reduce the long-term risk of heart disease and stroke in these patients," said UC Davis pediatric cardiologist Lakshmi Nagaraju. "Lipid disorders are very common, especially with our current sedentary lifestyle."
The clinic team includes a pediatric cardiologist with additional training in lipidology, a cardiac sonographer and a dietitian. When needed, a pediatric endocrinologist and geneticist are also available for consults.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that approximately one out of five children and adolescents (21%) had at least one abnormal cholesterol measure (high total cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high non-HDL cholesterol) between 2011 and 2014.
Patients will need to be referred by their primary care physician to be seen at this clinic.
The clinic is located at 1620 East Roseville Parkway, Roseville.
