Folsom Lake excavation plan details

Placer County Supervisor Kirk Uhler has posted a letter from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation explaining in detail its plans for excavating decomposed granite from Folsom Lake near Granite Bay.

The letter from the federal agency includes answers to 82 questions raised by the agency’s plans. Bureau Area Manager Michael R. Finnegan wrote the letter in response to a recent correspondence from Supervisor Uhler asking for answers to questions raised during a July 11 meeting of the Granite Bay Municipal Advisory Council.

To see copies of both letters, go to Supervisor Uhler’s Website  or by going to the Placer County homepage at www.placer.ca.gov, selecting the ‘Board of Supervisors’ link near the top of the homepage, and selecting Supervisor Uhler’s name on the board’s main page. On his website, the letters are available under the ‘District 4 News’ link.

In his letter, Supervisor Uhler thanked Mr. Finnegan for attending the July 11 MAC meeting and answering many questions raised there. The Supervisor asked for written answers to all of the questions raised by the federal agency’s plans, emphasizing that is the best way to ensure everyone has access to the same information.

‘As you know, the Granite Bay community has many questions and concerns regarding this planned operation,’ Uhler said in his letter. ‘As both their representative and a Granite Bay resident, I too am concerned.’   Supervisor Uhler represents the 4th district, which includes Granite Bay and part of Roseville.

The Bureau of Reclamation is working with several other federal, state and local agencies on dam-safety improvements at Folsom Lake.

As part of that effort, the Bureau is preparing to improve several dikes located along the lake’s west shore to prevent internal seepage. The agency plans to excavate decomposed granite from the lake bed near Mooney Ridge and use it as fill for the dikes.
