South Yuba River State Park: Summer Cooldown

Escape the Summer Heat on the South Yuba

Penn Valley, Calif.- Looking for something to do that’s a little more low-key and doesn’t involve massive crowds or spending the day on the freeway?

Located within about an hour’s drive from Roseville, South Yuba River State Park is a good bet if you enjoy sunning on a quiet beach and playing in the cool, pristine waters of one of California’s most beautiful rivers.

Worth the twists and turns

This gem of a state park is a bit off the beaten path, but worth every twist and turn on the drive to get there.

Located on Pleasant Valley Road north of Lake Wildwood, South Yuba River State Park provides stunning scenery and water access. Price of admission is a nominal $5 parking fee. Be advised there is additional parking beyond the smaller lot at the main entrance just past the bridge.

Upon arrival, we highly recommend a visit to the ranger station to learn which swimming holes and beaches might best meet your needs. Some require short hikes, while others are just a few feet from the parking lot. Each swimming area has its own unique character and atmosphere.

In the past, we’ve gone down a few of the proverbial rabbit holes that have taken us to gems of hidden beaches. On this Friday morning, we decided on the beach just south of Bridgeport Covered Bridge. On weekends and holidays this area gets crowded due to its proximity to the parking entrance. Short walks down the park trails lead to more secluded beaches to relax.

Cooling off, chilling out

The crisp, cool waters of the South Yuba deliver an invigorating contrast against the hot California sun. Find a shady spot to unpack.

Packing in coolers, floating devices and folding chairs are well worth the effort, as the hours of fun quickly pass. Water shoes are also encouraged for the often rocky riverbed. You’ll be glad you have them.

Cell Phone Service: Non-existent in our experience. We switch to airplane mode to save the battery.

With $5 for parking, and few gallons of gas and a cooler full of goodies, it’s an unbeatable combination that adds up to affordable fun for almost everyone’s budget.

South Yuba River State Park provides a scenic adventure and summer escape with pricing that’s hard to beat. All within a reasonable drive from South Placer County. Learn more at www.southyubariverstatepark
