Downtown Roseville Making Way for the Future
The Roseville Telephone Museum is permanently closed. The downtown Roseville museum boasted one of the most extensive collections of antique telephones and telecommunications memorabilia in the nation.
History of the Roseville Telephone Museum in Roseville
The Roseville Telephone Museum grew out of the history of Roseville's independent telephone company, founded by William Doyle in 1914. Beginning with just 160 subscribers, the company eventually became an important part of the community's growth and development.
In 1989, Roseville Telephone began collecting historic telephones, equipment and memorabilia to preserve the story of telecommunications. Those efforts culminated in the opening of the Roseville Telephone Museum in 1994.
Located at 106 Vernon Street, the 4,500-square-foot museum featured four galleries filled with historic telephones, early switchboards, telephone booths, line insulators and novelty phones. Among its notable exhibits were early telephones associated with Alexander Graham Bell and a magneto switchboard once used by the Roseville Telephone Company.
For more than three decades, the museum offered visitors a unique look at how telephone technology evolved from the earliest days of local service to the modern communications era.
